World Oceans Day 2016

Today, June the 8th, is the World Oceans Day.

world oceans day

The tagline of this event is healthy ocean, healthy planet.
I couldn’t say it in a straighter, simpler way.

My long-standing fascination with the oceans is well documented.
I came this >< far from taking a second degree in Oceanography1.
The sea still features heavily both in my “serious work” (in which I study fossil plankton to help define the state of health of ancient and modern seas) and in my “moonlighting” work as a writer.
The sea is often part of my stories.
But I don’t want to plug my stories today. Continue reading

3000 in one day

Olivetti_L32_MToday I’m putting myself to the test, both for fun and profit.
The idea is to write a 3000+ words horror story on spec, aiming at an anthology whose deadline looms closer.
The check is enough to put food on my table for a week, but apart from that I feel like flexing my writing muscles, and placing another story with my name on it out there.

So I’ll write, revise and post it today.

Right now I’m about 1500 words in it, and it’s going pretty smooth – despite a blink in the electric system that caused my computer to flip this morning, and so I lost 500 words.
But the rewrite is actually better than the lost original, so there.

Back to work.
I’ll keep you posted!

Visit the Mediterranean

mediterranean cruiseWhen I started writing The Corsair, the idea of setting the stories in the Mediterranean area was one of the main premises of the series.
I wanted the glamour, exoticism and variety of the Mediterranean coast, along which three continents meet.

As part of the research for the series, I collected a number of travel posters from the 1930s (the era in which I originally planned to set the series) and the 1950s.
The posters were useful both in determining the main tourist destinations in the area in those years, and in defining a certain atmosphere and style.
Here’s a very small selection.
Enjoy!

Other People’s Pulp: The Villa Diodati Club

Yesterday I spent a wonderful afternoon with the other members of the Club Villa Diodati, a professional organization of writers and fantasists.

Villa Diodati

Here, in a shot caught by the esteemed Paolo Cavazza, I share the stage with (from left to right): Franco Pezzini, Danilo Arona, Cristiana Astori, Anna Berra & Massimo Soumaré.

And yes, I’m the only ugly one.
I’ll have to deal with it.

Status report

We are slowly recovering, me and my brother, that is, from the untimely death of our father. We are trying to put his things in order and see where we stand.

Having spent the last two years taking care of the old man’s failing health almost full-time, we find ourselves now both out of work, and looking for any kind of job to help us pay the bills and move on.

Which means that I’ll have less time for writing – because writing is something you can do more or less easily while sitting by a bed-ridden person, but not so easy when you are working in an office, or in a field.
And this is bad, because I have a ton of things to write – with contracts signed and expecting readers (a lot of them, hopefully!)

In our job-hunting, we are currently slamming against the classic…

you are too old/you have too many qualifications

… problem that’s typical of this country – and it’s felt even more strongly now because of the continuing financial crisis.
But we will manage.

This means that Karavansara will not shut down.
Posts will remain erratic for a while, but we are still open for business.
Or leisure.
Or whatever.

Thank you all for your patience and your sympathy.
