Revenge & Vengeance

Yesterday I stumbled on the same concept twice in a matter of hours, in writing first and then listening to a podcast, and it’s something I can relate to, so here’s a brief post on the subject.

William Goldman, legendary screenwriter and author of The Princess Bride, wrote

I write out of revenge.

William Goldman

And as I was listening to punk rocker, author and activist Henry Rollins interviewed by Joe Rogan, when asked about his powerhouse of activities he said

I am motivated by vengeance.

Henry Rollins

While Goldman stopped there, Rollins expanded on the idea. What motivates him, he said, is the will to get back to all those that along the way told him he would never make it.

A failed comic

I’m currently taking an online sketching course. It’s quite good, and while I’m going mighty slow, I can see a certain improvement. Nothing to write home about, but small steps away from stick figures.
My lack of graphical skills was always a problem to me – in part, because as a geologist and paleontologist, you are required to be able to sketch, in part because it crippled some of my very earliest projects.

Nevèrÿon

Of course I knew it, when I picked it up. I knew it would be hard going, and it would mock all I know about the genre, and make me feel small and stupid and basically fire-bomb all I know about writing.

Crowdfunding Hope & Glory

We have just launched the crowdfunding for the Italian edition of Hope & Glory, my steampulp/adventure roleplaying game.
While this is of little immediate interest for the readers of Karavansara (you can already get the game in English, via DriveThruRPG), this is a big moment for me and the crew, and I want to share it with you guys.

Also, it’s likely that any extra development fueled by the Italian crowdfunding will then see the light, in a form or another, in English. But that’s for my publisher to say.

In the meantime, HERE IS THE LINK to check out our crowdfunding page.

Karavansara U. – first courses

When you have a good idea (or one you think is a good idea), you better put it in practice as soon as possible. Hesitation is a trap. So, I mentioned my idea to present a selection of courses the readers of Karavansara might be interested in taking, using online platforms.

The rules of thumb (we can’t really call them by-laws) of the Karavansara University are quite simple:

  • free online courses
  • related to the topics we usually cover on this blog: adventure & historical fiction, fantasy & pulp, history, the East, the Silk Road, and the whole wide world

And with this in mind, here’s a first selection of five courses that might kindle your curiosity…
