Help me enlarge my library

I found myself another time-waster.
And you ladies and gentlemen out there might help me.
Let me explain – and to do so we’ll have to take a tour of my library.
Now, you all know I am a lover of historical fiction and historical non fiction – non-fiction-wise I love the history of Asia, of the British Empire, of Rome and the Mediterranean, too.
I have a very soft spot for Elizabeth Tudor and her age.
In this category I bundle also old travelers’ tales and the odd collections of National Geographic articles.

I’ve got tons of books on the subject, and I plan to get more – what’s life, after all, but the accumulation of books? Continue reading

Sax Rohmer’s Sumuru in Space

Yesterday, taking a pause from my writing to enjoy a serving of chocolate cake, I watched one of the worst movies I ever saw.
And I saw plenty of bad movies.

The thing is called Sax Rohmer’s Sumuru, it was shot in 2003 and it goes more or lesslike this…

If you are perplexed, so was I.
And if you are not, let me bring you up to speed… Continue reading

The Underworld and back

658573._UY475_SS475_Yesterday I suggested to a friend an old book that was one of the most fun, intelligent reads I chanced upon back in… ah, must have been 1991 or 1992.

It also happens to be somewhat on topic here on Karavansara, being both a travel book and a book about ancient magic in the Mediterranean basin. Continue reading

Weekend in Shimla

I’m getting ready to spend tomorrow playing roleplaying games in the best, most fun, little big gaming convention in the West (and also in the East) – Pinerole 2017.

This will be a great opportunity to playtest and stress-test Hope & Glory with a bunch of hardened Savage Worlds players.
For the occasion, I have prepared a scenario called Weekend in Shimla.

This is us, out there

I found this picture, drawing analogies between the Cassini probe and us.

And it is fine, because this is what science does – science builds tools that extend our senses, that make us more so that we can explore the universe.

Cassini is burning in a literal blaze of glory as it plunges into the clouds of Saturn, just as I write these lines. It is the latest witness to our species’ vocation for exploration, for going there and look what we find there.

I honestly hope Cassini’s blaze is a light signaling our civilization has got its explorer’s mojo back and working.
It’s been damn boring these last few years on this planet.
