There is money on your account

One of the most irritating mails that pop up in my mailbox from time to time come from PayPal, and they are sent to remind me that I have money on my account, and here’s a selection of ways in which I might like to burn them.

Now, apart from the fact that I never needed suggestions to find ways to spend my money, really, the fact that there is still some credit in my PayPal is usually reason to celebrate. PayPal has been functioning like my last-ditch fund for four years now, and there’s been moments when without PayPal we would have not been able to eat.
So, yay, there’s funds on the account!

And in fact, considering my dire economic situation, I find the “You’ve got money, here’s how to blow them!” attitude somewhat offensive.
I was raised believing that hard-earned money deserve respect and consideration. Not worship – they are not our god – but they are an important tool, and they can make a life-or-death difference in certain situations. It costs hard work to make them, and they should be spent in a considerate way.

This silly “let’s go and spend some money – you’ve got some on your account!” thing is superficial, and stupid.
And every time I see an unexpected communication from PayPal my heart skips a beat. So no, I don’t like it one bit.

  1. Marketers are always searching for ‘fresh’ ways to misrepresent something — such as that paltry paypal promotion. A term marketers use in-house is the ‘bold challenge’ — barefaced lying thinly disguised as valuable information. Our current president uses his bully pulpit to dispense with that disguise entirely.

  2. Hi! You’ve got money and it’s our job to get you to spend it! Especially with ebay or some other large company we’re aligned with who’ll give us a kickback from what you spend.

    It never ends.
