I have always been grateful for my fluency in German and thoroughly enjoy keeping it in fine trim. German grammar is one helluva balrog to wrestle, but nothing has given me a better grasp on understanding English grammar. Actually Latin is where I first learned about ‘cases.’ By the way, that very Latin gives me some help while visiting Strategie Evolutive 🙂

I would like to learn German, but the complexity scares me. I tried Dutch, and I simply could not get into it – possibly also due to other worries and stuff keeping my mind otherwise busy.
I did five years of Latin in school, thirty-odd years ago, and while I can still read it moderately well, I can’t remember a single bit of grammar. But I am revising it.

I taught German for many years and developed a number of heuristics designed to counter the lousy methodology most texts use to explain the four cases and three genders. You inspire me to write more about those methods because they go against the paradigm memorizing techniques that, in my opinion, only make the language more fearsome. German language texts were far better forty years ago than they are today.
As for Latin, I regained my Latin through the Wheelock series, also written many decades ago.

I’ll be very interested in reading about these methods, because I too believe that often languages are taught in a way that emphasizes rule memorization over rule application.
