In the last few months I did a few session of public writing. I did two online, using Google Docs, and one in public, with my friend Fabrizio Borgio on the other side of the table, both of us pounding on our respective typewriters1.
Some compared this to exhibitionism, but I say, if it was good enough for Harlan Ellison, it’s good enough for me.
And the experiment was rather successful, so we decided to up the ante.
Tomorrow, starting around 5.30 pm, I will fire up Google Docs, I’ll share the link and I’ll start writing.
I do not know what I will write.
OK, I’ve got a few ideas and options, but really, I will wing it.
I’ll write for about three hours, give or take half an hour, and everybody will be able to peep over my shoulder and get an idea of what happens on the page when a writer (for want of a better word, or a better job) writes.
But then things will get a lot more interesting, because at 9.00 pm, give or take half an hour, I will hand my text to my friend Germano ‘Hell’ Greco.
Hell is an excellent editor, and he will have a go at my story, once again in public, for everybody to see.
Editing is to many as misunderstood as writing, and it’s probably much more mysterious, and I think it will be a nice opportunity for me to get a free editing, and for everybody else to see what really happens when the text is handed over to a professional editor.
The whole thing will be in Italian, so I realize this will have little to no interest for the readers of this blog, but I would like to do it in English sooner or later. I will try to get my friend Claire involved, but not right now, as she has other engagements.
But really, sooner or later, why not?
It could be fun.
- what a silly turn of phrase, imagine had we been pounding at each other’s typewriter! ↩
