Thanks for sharing!! I do love Otto and Karl, traveling with office jacket and salakoff, and donning a tie for more formal receptions at small towns that are caravan stops…

Why title is “100 km Across the Plain”, where from Turpan to Tien Shen distance is 750 km, from Tien Shen to Ili distance is 250? Of course Ili is not in the plain, but Turpan is and they must arrive to Turpan coming from somewhere (the Urumqi – Lanzhou train was in construction) and this somewhere may be from the North, via Baotou and the Gobi Desert, like Orlandini, or from the South, Xian and Lanzhou, the city that Ella and Peter find “romantic” 3 year later. In any case, it was a wonderful voyage. Do you know something else about these two travelers?

It seems that the area was crowded in 1930 – 1935 🙂

I am trying to find some references about the Swedish expedition for a future post – but indeed the area was VERY crowded in those years… which is kind of funny considering it was considered dangerous and “lawless”, there was a civil war going on, and the Nanjing government actively discouraged foreign travelers from visiting the region.
