Writing marathon

Here is what I’ll do…

No, ok, let me explain.
I’ve just finished the first Hope & Glory novelette, a 12.000-words thing that goes under the title of Glass Houses.
This is actually the second story in this new steampunk series, as I’ve yet to finish the first (somewhere in the fist week of May). There’s a total of six novelettes planned – I’ll write the lot, and then start publishing them with a regular, monthly schedule.

But that’s not what I wanted to talk about now. Continue reading

Shakespearian Insults – a Primer

shakWe discussed briefly in the past the art and practice of Latin and Greek profanities.
But when it comes to colorful language, I stick by the Elizabethans, and indeed a lot of Shakespearean insults are not only useful as we write fantasy (historical or otherwise), but also in real life.
Sure it takes’em by surprise.

And despite what some may think, a well-placed insult can carry a lot of information and push the narrative forward.

And here’s a short round-up of Shakespearean insults as narrative devices, for starters… Continue reading

Why do you read thrilling adventures and wild stories?

It started with my friend Claire’s latest post – which you can find here.
Go read it.
Done?
Fine.

egypt

Contrary to what Claire seems to think, science fiction and fantasy writers get asked quite often why they write what they do.
It’s even worse for horror writers.
Adventure writers tend to get a lot of blank stares.
In general, should you ever reveal to your friends and acquaintances that you are a writer1 and write imaginative fiction, you’ll get asked, basically

Why?!

The answer, of course, is usually that we write what we like to read. Continue reading

Huaqueros

f7d3180b8e619e1ee49ad82f72d91bceIsn’t this business of writing a hoot?
For instance…

About five years ago I outlined an idea for a series of stories.
In a nutshell – the adventures of a team of disgruntled and hard-up university researchers that recycle themselves as “retrievers of ancient artifacts”.
Basically, a series of stories about a band of highly qualified looters1.

The series would have been called “Huaqueros”.
Nothing came out of it.
But… Continue reading

Days Off

cover72774-mediumI’ve been writing a lot these last few weeks, and so I’m taking a short vacation.
A busman’s holiday, you might say – I took the weekend off to write without plan… no outlines, no pitches, no planned cover, no contract.
Just writing – because I still find it fun, after all, and it must stay fun.
A little like somebody going to work every day on a bicycle can find solace in a bicycle trip in the hills on a Sunday.
And today, I’m taking the afternoon off to read an intriguing little book – the cover of which you see here on the right. A pretty pulpy number – shades of Holmes, Dracula and Doc Savage…
More news tomorrow.
Have fun!

Shut up and write!

This picture was posted yesterday on my Facebook wall.

I’ve yet to decide if it was somebody’s idea of a joke – but I did nor consider it particularly funny1.

Maybe comes from the fact that I write instead of posing at being a writer, but experience has taught me there is no magical artifact.

The only magic formula is

shut up and write

Which is what I will do.

  1. as a rule of thumb, never joke about a certain cathegory or group if you don’t belong to it.
