Today was another good day – I mailed a translation and a chunk of gaming-related material, and then I did some improvisational cooking to put together some lunch. As I was eating, I checked out the first two episodes of a series I did not know, called The Outpost.

Let’s pilfer the summary from Wikipedia:

The Outpost follows Talon (Jessica Green), the lone survivor of a race called ‘Blackbloods’. Years after her entire village is destroyed by a gang of brutal mercenaries, Talon travels to a lawless fortress on the edge of the civilized world, as she tracks the killers of her family. On her journey to this outpost, Talon discovers she possesses a mysterious supernatural power that she must learn to control in order to save herself, and defend the world against a fanatical religious dictator.

Oh, my…

Well, really, it’s not that bad, but it’s not that good either.
There is not a new idea in it, but this is not the real problem – nor is it the fact that this was made on a basic shoestring budget.

The world is full of good low-budget, derivative fantasy that you can enjoy while making a break.
What’s sorely missing here is the writing.
The characters wander, their dialogue is empty, and in general nobody comes across as interesting enough to keep the attention of the viewer… well, this viewer, up.

Which is a pity, because the lead actress, Jessica Green, is beautiful and good in her role – despite the fact that she was written like a one-dimensional, contradictory brat. And the rest of the cast, while at loss for something to do, is still quite good.
Sure, they talk a lot about stuff the production can’t afford to actually show you, but it would not be that bad were they given something more to go on.
And yet, three seasons were product – the third currently on hiatus as filming was interrupted by the COVID emergency.
Could there be something interesting in the following episodes.
I’ll give them a look – but not right now.
