Nice interview, I agree with many of your points.
A good historical novel should deliver the interesting story of some interesting characters (well, just like any other form of fiction), but should also take care to provide a convincing representation of what is, effectively, a different world, that works in a different way of our own, where the driving principles and sensibilities are not the present ones. Otherwise, it is not historical fiction, but fiction with different clothes 😉
