I’ve written about historical accuracy and fantasy in the past.
I like doing research for my stories – I happen to read good books and watch interesting video, and have a good excuse to procrastinate, all in the name of quality.
Because if I find absolutely ridiculous the armchair experts on Ancient Warfare or other assorted geeks that evaluate the worth of a story by the serial numbers on the chainmail hauberks, I find equally insufferable the worthless hacks that place Jesuits in the Crusades, or wonder what would have happened had the Egyptians not been defeated by the Roman Empire.
In the age of internet, checking out a few basic facts is pretty easy.
All this to say that I’ve fallen in love – very chastily, of course – with a website I discovered a few days back.
It’s called Frock Flicks, and it is (almost) entirely dedicated to costumes in historical movies, and the good and the horrors thereof.
Their Snark Week probably had something to do with my fascination for the Frock Flicks crew and their articles.
And so this promises to become one of my new paramount timewast… ehm, research resources.
Because let’s admit it – a lot of our imagination of the past comes from movies.
And a lot of what we see in movies – and TV series – is, basically, rubbish.
Yes, I know – if the zipper at the back of Godzilla never spoiled the fun of that movie1, then a wrong costume will not spoil the fruition of a costume drama or a series about Vikings dressed like bikers.
It’s only a movie!
Yes indeed, but then – why not get it right?
So, ok, I’ll spend some times browsing the Frock Flick pages, and taking notes, trying to make my stories a little better, without overdoing it.
- and, on the other hand, who can tell whether giant mutant atomic-fire-breathing lizards really have a zipper down their back or not? ↩

Good find. As a G-fan, I’ll be that annoying nerd here. it’s not the giant lizard who is famous for having a zipper on his back. In fact, they used the monster’s spines to hide it. I think the famous zipper was On the Creature from the Black Lagoon. 😉
