Ah, this is a fun topic – one of the five generated last week, as I was telling you.
Now “about adventure stories” is a bit vague – about reading or writing them?
And then, Adventure stories is a pretty wide field.

And who am I, anyway, to give anybody suggestions?

But ok, it’s part of the game, so here’s my ten point list of tips for adventure writers.
For what they are worth.

1 . Don’t be afraid
They will put you down, talk about escapism, implausibility, silliness, and generally try to put you in your place. Don’t be afraid to tell your story.

2 . Read
Read everything. Adventure stories, sure, but also history books, biographies, travel books…

3 . Write about something you are curious about.
The Silk Road? The Orient Express? Diving for treasure? … as long as in your story there’s some element that engages you, you should be able to engage the readers, too.

4 . Give your characters a theme song.
It will help you characterizing them.

5 . A little exoticism goes a long way.
Adventure stories are often about place – find a way to characterize that place with a few well-placed details.

6 . Don’t fear exposition.
It’s narrative, right?

7 . A modicum of violence can be entertaining…
… but finding brutality fun, is sick.

8 . Turn at least one of your starting ideas on its head.
Because readers love a twist.

9 . Plan through, but don’t plan too much.
Give your characters some maneuvering space for improvisation.

10 . Remember you can’t please everyone.
